Menangle II
Location: Menangle, NSW
Year: 2021 - Present
This family home demonstrates a consideration and appreciation for the site and its surrounds. At the core of the design there is a deep connection to the natural landscape and the local wildlife. Open spaces within the home nurture family connection and interaction, paired with more intimate and separated spaces for relaxation and introspection. The home also has designated spaces that reflect the interests and times of significance to the occupants; literature, artwork and family heirlooms have designated spaces, alongside a carefully selected material palette anchoring the home not only to the site it sits on, but also the people that inhabit it. In the same way art, music and literature alike have the ability to connect, inspire and leave a long-lasting emotional impact, this architecturally designed home is the very vessel to do the same for the family and friends that live and interact with it.
The site is bound by large parcels of land, where by the design has the capacity to be bound seamlessly within the site and its surrounds. The series of long, low lying pavilions are extruded from a central axis and aligned to the natural topography. When entering the home, you’re welcomed by a grand entry, one that celebrates raw materials and frames views over the landscape and pool towards the rear. The central spine of circulation which runs through the house acts as a gallery space, with selective openings to the landscape being complimented by adjacent wall faces that showcase sentimental artworks. The pool acts as the defining element of the backyard, piercing through the landscape and disappearing into the outlook beyond.
