Edward Street – Commercial
Location: Camden, NSW
Year: 2019 - Present
The JMA “Hub” presents a new model of commercial architecture to the suburb of Camden. The project demonstrates a confident design approach that juxtaposes the notion of traditional and modern architecture. The local character is respected and used to create an architectural language that is translated into a new built form. The design utilises sculptural form, experimental use of materials and a high level of detailing to reflect the philosophy of the firm. The design aims to be an iconic development that will challenge the way architecture is viewed and appreciated in Camden.
This design has been set back from the front boundary and steps back into a veranda and entry zone. A series of gabled roof forms is present, with its Edward Street frontage articulating a prominent gable through the use of brick and glazing on street level, featuring three main openings. This design is a physical manifestation of the historic built form trends and proportions seen within Camden, applied with a contemporary architectural flare. Planted areas and growing vines are set to soften the architectural features, with a small space to be utilised as a café, activating the front façade, allowing for the seamless integration of public areas on the ground floor.
